Battery Swap vs Fast Charge: The eVTOL Turnaround Debate
eVTOL ground turnaround time is a core unit-economics driver. Battery swap and megawatt fast charge each have distinct trade-offs.
The economic difference between a 10-minute and a 40-minute turnaround is enormous. It determines how many revenue flights an aircraft flies per day, and therefore whether unit economics work.
Battery swap
Swap gets an aircraft airborne in under 10 minutes but requires additional battery inventory (typically 2× fleet count) and standardized pack geometry across OEMs — which is not happening.
Megawatt charging
Direct fast charge at 1MW+ can refill a pack in 15 to 25 minutes but stresses cells, shortening cycle life. Grid connections at that power draw are non-trivial.
Hybrid architecture
The pragmatic answer: swap at the busiest 3 vertiports for peak turnaround, fast charge everywhere else. Capital is concentrated where utilization justifies it.
